What this is
Ananse News reports on Ghana first, then the wider continent, then the diaspora that carries both with them. The name is from the storyteller who won the world’s stories from the sky god — not from the trickster half of him.
Most African stories reach an international audience only when they are large enough to be a disaster or small enough to be a curiosity. The middle — a mining licence, a transfer window, a court ruling, a musician’s third album — is where people actually live. That is the middle this newsroom works in.
Who is responsible
Ananse News is independently owned and operated. It takes no political funding and carries no undisclosed commercial arrangements. Editorial responsibility for everything published here is human and rests with the newsroom.
Where a story is wrong, we correct it in place, say what changed, and leave the record visible. The full standard is set out in the Editorial Policy.
How it is made
We use AI, and we will always tell you where.
This matters enough to state plainly rather than bury.
Selection and sourcing
Stories are gathered from published news feeds — the BBC, Reuters partners, Ghanaian and continental outlets — and ranked by an automated system. Every story names the outlet it came from and links to it. We do not claim original reporting we have not done.
Narration
Bulletins on the television channel and on YouTube are read by a synthetic voice. It is not a person, it is not presented as one, and it has no name.
Pictures
Illustrations accompanying wire stories are generated. No generated picture is a photograph of the event it accompanies, and none depicts a real, identifiable person. Where we have a real photograph, we use it and credit it.
Drama and fiction
The Film Studio produces short original drama. The scripts, characters and stories are ours; the images and voices are generated. These are clearly labelled as fiction and are never presented as news or as record of real events.
